Montana Passes Raw Milk Bill With “Big Sky” Size Loophole

When it comes to dairy production, Montana is not even among the top 30 states, but it may soon be selling the most dangerous raw milk in America.  Only four people in the vast state will be responsible for regulating the raw milk supply there, and there won’t be much in the way of rules.

Missoula Republican Champ Edmunds, who is exploring a run for the U.S. Senate in 2014 against Democrat Max Baucus, has succeeded in getting his “small herd exemption” bill through the Montana House of Representatives on a stunning 96-to-3 vote.

State Rep. Edmunds may be taking a page from Montana’s other U.S. Senator, Democrat Jon Tester, who made advocacy for small farms his hallmark.

Joining a federal order raises issues for Calif. dairy producers

While California dairymen don't need legislation to petition the USDA to join the federal milk marketing order system, they would need some legal language to roll parts of California's order system advantageous to them into the federal order.
Rep. David Valadao, R-Calif., last week introduced HR1396, which provides for the inclusion of California as a separate federal milk marketing order.
California's state milk marketing order operates differently than federal orders, said Michael Marsh, CEO of Western United Dairymen, the state's largest dairy producer organization with about 900 members.
Western United wants to be sure it understands the ins and outs of joining the federal system before encouraging producers to take that route, Marsh said.

Dairy industry sounds alarm: Government cuts could lead to higher prices

The dairy industry could suffer devastating effects and consumers could wind up paying more for milk after sequestration cuts led to the elimination of a key federal monthly milk production report used to set dairy prices.

Or, according to some dairy experts, nothing significant could change.

Dairy farmers use the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports to determine production, and milk processors and brokers use the information to judge and set the market. The reports were cut as part of federal sequestration measures.

“Not having the reports can have significant impacts because there is no way of knowing what the supply will be,” said Greg Bussler, a Wisconsin statistician for the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

March to save dairy industry

WHILE the milk drinkers of Australia savour historically low prices, the cuts are pushing dairy farmers to the brink of ruin.

The average SA dairy farmer will lose close to $100,000 this year and some will not survive without significant help through improved milk prices or government handouts.

Now the local industry is taking a stand and tomorrow, up to 400 farmers and people from supporting businesses will march in Murray Bridge, calling for an immediate national dairy summit to address the industry crisis.

And consumers - who are enjoying some of the lowest fresh milk prices in the world thanks to $1-a-litre milk offered by grocery giants Coles and Woolworths - can also expect to face repercussions if no action is taken.
