AABP Partners with Pfizer Animal Health in New Scholarship Program for Veterinary Students
Investing in the future of the large animal veterinary profession, the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) and Pfizer Animal Health announce the launch of the AABP Foundation-Pfizer Animal Health Scholarship, aimed toward providing veterinary students with the opportunity to receive one of several scholarships.
“These scholarships, which come at a time when the large animal veterinarian industry is experiencing a shortage, will help recruit outstanding students for careers in bovine veterinary medicine,” said Gatz Riddell, DVM, and executive vice president for AABP.
“Veterinarians represent an integral role in the cattle industry because they help ensure a safe and wholesome food supply. Exposing the younger generation to large animal medicine becomes such a crucial component in the survivability and success of the profession as well as, the industry,” said Roger Saltman, DVM, director of cattle veterinary operations at Pfizer Animal Health.
Offered to third-year veterinary students in the United States, the scholarship program will support students interested in food animal medicine. As part of the scholarship, recipients will receive a travel stipend to the September AABP conference in Omaha, Neb.
The scholarship application process will be open from April 3 to June 15, 2009, with the electronic application found online at www.aabp.org. Applicants must provide information regarding their cattle industry background and provide answers to several essay questions pertaining to the role of large animal veterinarians in today’s society. Applicants must be students enrolled in colleges of veterinary medicine in the United States and must be in their third year of the veterinary curriculum at the time of application. For more information about the program, email aabphq@aabp.org or call (800) 269-2227.
Nagendra Shah Honored with William C. Haines Dairy Science Award by the California Dairy Research Foundation
The California Dairy Research Foundation (CDRF) presented Victoria University Professor Nagendra P. Shah with the William C. Haines Dairy Science Award in recognition of his contribution to the field of dairy science at the 11th Cal Poly Dairy Ingredients Symposium in San Francisco. Dr. Shah gave a presentation on the liberation of bioactive peptides in dairy foods by probiotic cultures and the associated nutritional functionalities.
“Dr. Shah truly represents the diversity of dairy research and the global nature of the dairy industry. Over his 30-year career, his work has spanned three continents, four countries and five universities and has focused on topics such as the use of probiotic bacteria in foods, the functional properties of milk, fermented dairy products and the development of low-fat Mozzarella,” said Dr. Joseph O’Donnell, Executive Director of the California Dairy Research Foundation. “He is a pioneer in the field of probiotics and has developed selective enumeration techniques for combinations of various strains including L. acidophilus, Bifidobacterium, and L. casei that are being used by manufacturers, researchers and analytic labs today.”
“I am honored to be recognized with the Haines award. Awards like this encourage scientists and academics to carry out innovative research in dairy science of commercial significance. My work on Mozzarella cheese, which uses a number of innovative approaches to reduce fat content while retaining similar functionalities as a full-fat Mozzarella is a good example,” said Dr. Shah. “I am thankful to my family for their support and to my colleagues who presented me as a candidate.”
As a renowned specialist in the use of probiotic bacteria in foods, Dr. Shah currently serves as professor of food science and technology at Victoria University in Melbourne. He has been recognized by the American Dairy Science Association, the Australian Institute of Food Science & Technology and the Dairy Industry Association of Australia. He serves as editor of the International Journal of Dairy Science and on the editorial boards of numerous journals.
Nomination forms for the 2010 award are available online at www.cdrf.org under “Awards & Giving.” The deadline to submit 2010 nominations is September 22, 2009.
